Why Three Layers
The Norse record is incomplete by nature, not by accident. Christianization, oral transmission, regional variation, and the simple fact that most ordinary people do not write theology — all of that leaves holes. Filling holes is human. Pretending holes were never there is how traditions get invented backward.
Einherjarhall labels layers so I can read my own site critically. When a Learn page says Inferred, it is admitting debate. When a spirituality page says Modern, it is not claiming Snorri proved it. I want that honesty on the Path to the Hammer too — especially here, where belief and identity are on the line.
Where Scholars Agree — and Where They Do Not
Attested: major gods exist in poetry and inscription; blót happened; temples and outdoor cult sites left traces; conversion was uneven. Inferred with broad support: Old Norse religion was less centralized than medieval Christianity; local practice varied; myth and ritual were related but not identical.
Disputed: how much organized priesthood existed; how literally afterlife halls were believed; which modern rituals descend from continuity versus invention; how to weight archaeology against text. Reasonable people disagree. Certainty theater helps no one.
Christianization's Shadow
We lost more than we kept. Missionary law codes, changing burial practice, church building on older sites — the shift is Attested. The exact inner experience of a tenth-century farmer at the boundary of faiths is not. Inferred work tries to model that world; it cannot resurrect it whole.
Modern Heathenry sometimes treats the Eddas as if they were written for practitioners in 2026. They were not. Using them devotionally anyway is Modern choice — defensible, common, not historically automatic. I prefer naming that choice to smuggling it.
Holding Uncertainty Without Quitting
Uncertainty is not an excuse for ignorance. It is the accurate map. I can still learn languages, read poems, visit scholarship, sit with practitioners, and build practice that declares itself reconstructed. The failure mode is performing ancientness to soothe doubt.
This commitment protects the others. Sources (I), Mjölnir (II), Valhalla (III) — each mixes layers. If I cannot track which layer I am standing on, I will claim too much too soon. Reconstruction literacy is part of why the hammer stays unworn.
