Commitment IX

Runes — Writing and Sacrifice

Letters carved in stone.
A god who paid with his body to learn them.

Runes Were Writing First

The Attested record begins with practical carving: owner marks, memorials, business tags, graffiti, prayers. Elder Futhark on early continental and Scandinavian objects; Younger Futhark as language evolved. They are alphabets adapted to knife and stone — not a separate mystical alphabet floating beside Latin.

The Language wing maps letters to sounds. That mundane fact grounds everything else. If I cannot read what a stone says, I should not claim what it magically means.

Odin's Payment

Hávamál stanzas 138–141 describe Odin hanging on YggdrasilIGG-dra-sil, wounded, peerless, for nine nights — then picking up the runes, learning spells, taking up scornful staves. Attested poetry presents knowledge as ordeal. There is no Amazon one-click rune download.

SigrdrífumálSIG-ur-dreef-oo-mawl lists named runes with advice — victory, birth, speech, help, etc. Scholars debate how literally to read the list. Inferred: a culture that carved letters on gravestones also attributed power to carved words. The bridge from alphabet to magic is attested in fragments, not a full manual.

Magic Without the New Age Gloss

Sagas show runes used for healing, cursing, and protection — sometimes backfiring dramatically. The Attested mood is cautious: wrong carving kills. That is far from modern "pick a cute rune for your mood" charts. Modern rune casting as divination is a living practice some Heathens swear by; others reject it as twentieth-century invention. I have not chosen a side yet.

What I am sure of: buying a crystal set with Elder Futhark etched on it does not make me heir to Odin's ordeal. Study, language, respect for grave markers, and honesty about invention — those come first.

What I Will and Won't Do

I will learn the alphabets, read inscriptions, and treat carved memorials as someone's grief — not props. I will not carve bindrunes on random objects because a blog said to. I will not confuse Unicode runes with historical forms.

If the path leads me to ritual rune use someday, I want it backed by source literacy — Attested where possible, Modern declared where not. The Well of Urd's planned rune feature will need that same discipline. For now, I am still in the library, not the workshop.

In the Hall

This commitment opens into years of material. Start here — then walk where the sources lead.
